Title: Sonic Colors
Post by: Luxray on May 26, 2010, 01:08:39 pm
A new Sonic Game has been announced for the Wii and DS, called:

A news article can be found here:
http://wii.kombo.com/article.php?artid=15867

I shall also quote you a press release on this from aforementioned article if you are lazy like me.

Quote
"We're excited to announce a brand-new game for Sonic the Hedgehog! Sonic Colors is a high speed action-adventure in which Sonic races through theme park-inspired worlds to rescue a colorful alien race from the clutches of Dr. Eggman. An extraordinary amusement park has been seen orbiting around the home planet of Sonic the Hedgehog, and rumors are spreading that an alien race of Wisps, who have a unique colorful energy, are being held captive there by the evil Dr. Eggman. Soon after arriving at the amusement park, Sonic discovers he is able to use these mysterious alien forces to help the Wisps escape!

Sonic Colors will be available on the Wii and the Nintendo DS around holiday 2010. Sonic Colors for the Wii seamlessly combines both 3D and classic 2D game play perspectives, while the Nintendo DS version takes full advantage of the console's dual screen.

Sonic Colors sees Sonic accelerating to adrenaline-pumping super speeds and blasting through obstacles in ways never before seen in a Sonic game. The alien Wisps featured in the game each have a unique "Color Power" that, once freed, Sonic is able to absorb while speeding through the various theme park inspired planets. The Wisp energy enables Sonic to create new paths through the stages by drilling through the ground (Yellow Drill) for example, or speeding through the stage as a laser (Cyan Laser). Stringing the Wisp power-ups together creates a combo that increases Sonic's boost gauge even more quickly. Exclusive Wisp power-ups will be available for both Wii and the Nintendo DS versions, ensuring a unique and super speedy gameplay experience for Sonic fans everywhere."

As for my opinion, it is far too early to call whether or not it will be a good game or not. I am pleased to see Tails in that trailer though, perhaps we get to have our two tailed fox back to the way he was? And those Wisps seem to match with the colors of the Chaos Emeralds. Perhaps they are vital to the story in that way? *spoilers* :o!

Let the speculation begin!

I offer to you: TRANSLATION FROM SEGAPRSPEAK TO PESSIMISTIC GAMER:

Quote
Sonic Colors sees Sonic accelerating to adrenaline-pumping super speeds and blasting through obstacles in ways never before seen in a Sonic game.
This means that the game will be zoomed in too far to quite see what you're doing all the time, while also hinting at "amazing" graphics via QTE-triggered cutscenes for the entire duration of your time at the controller.

Quote
The alien Wisps featured in the game each have a unique "Color Power" that, once freed, Sonic is able to absorb while speeding through the various theme park inspired planets.
There will be no meaningful storyline, and what you're wondering happened in other games will go unexplained for years to come!

Quote
The Wisp energy enables Sonic to create new paths through the stages by drilling through the ground (Yellow Drill) for example, or speeding through the stage as a laser (Cyan Laser).
Further, instead of directly make a sequal to other games whose mechanics we're hinting at, like you've been wanting for years and years, we're going to insult you're intelligence by expecting you to believe we made something new!

Quote
Stringing the Wisp power-ups together creates a combo that increases Sonic's boost gauge even more quickly. Exclusive Wisp power-ups will be available for both Wii and the Nintendo DS versions, ensuring a unique and super speedy gameplay experience for Sonic fans everywhere."
We will do everything in our power to make sure that this game is extremely difficult to chart, and there will be infinite combos everywhere, making Score Attacking into an absolute joke beyond anyone's comprehension of possibility!  This is to ensure that people who love and enjoy taking our games to the next level will cry and be shunned by the neo-fans who are often more likely to burp than cheer when patted on the back, due to their infantile nature we enjoy so very very much!

Will it be renamed with a "u" in Colours in Britain. That's the main question on my mind. Because there's no way I'm ever going to buy this game. Not after Unleashed.

This trailer and game through the eyes of the typical "Sonic Fan"

Sonic Colors, i.e. "Sonic Goes to Weed World." It would be epically hilarious if it turned out that the aliens were evil all along.

While we're at it, let's play a game and come up with ideas that Sega could rip off and slap Sonic into. The other players must guess the source material.

1. Fighting demons through the power of suicide.

2. Manipulate time identically to what's seen in Braid, use "Chaos Control" in title somewhere.

3. Pointing fingers at each other and shouting!!!
That alone ... is INSUFFICIENT!!!

EDIT:

I'm a bit less skeptical now ... though disappointed that Tails still appears to be non-playable.  Also, Eggmanland return?  Yay, they never explained whatever happened to it.

EDIT 2:
I sense nobody else gives a fred about this?  According to TSS (http://www.sonicstadium.org/news/sonic-colours-and-sonic-4-playable-at-e3), both Colors and 4 will be playable at E3 this year.

"Capcom and Konami have both taken dead series of yesteryear and made them fully playable in today's gaming universe, retaining much of what made them amazing in the first place, while still managing to not feel like a copy of prior games.  SEGA, completely unable to do this, continues to insult it's longest-standing fans because they still buy the worthless shit they put into the cases for sale at game-whores (gamespot to the uninitiated)."

I didn't realize the background planet in that Tropical Resort picture.

There were screenshots in Nintendo Power that showed most of this stuff.  Tropical Resort is a new revelation though.  I think.

Even saw the drill and laser in screenshots.

I'm still not all that interested.  I see Cruizer's hooked on the DS version though.

Because you said boxart, and i initially thought it was a Download only title (meaning before you said boxart). So i assumed a little too much there.

The DS footage should be something Luxray can enjoy ... yeah, it's Sonic Rush 3.  The Wii version, on the other hand, is STRONGLY reminiscent of Savannah Citadel, which has my hopes raised again, considering that I really enjoyed Unleashed, and this seems like a high-def version of what I've played.

After watching this (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-sonic-colors/101810?type=flv), I've decided to make Colors higher priority on my Sonic game want list than Sonic 4, if only for Eggman's showman-esque announcing. I just need to pray that you can turn off voice acting selectively, to hear Eggman without hearing an announcement for every power-up.

The DS version footage floating around isn't too special, but it does seem to show wall kicking becoming part of the moveset for 2D Colors as well (which is good, since it makes my hack (http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_2_Retro_Remix) relevant :P)

That music is ... quite awesome actually! Also, it confused me there being that second announcer guy, I wondered if they got a new VA for Sonic at first ... pretty much my only complaint is that it seems kinda easy, I'm hoping that's just because this is the first level or something.  I know they claimed to have designed it more "for kids", but they made the same claim on Black Knight and ... I still haven't beaten that <.<
Title: Re: Sonic Colors
Post by: Luxray on June 17, 2010, 09:32:16 am
I doubt this is a starter level..they would naturally introduce the wisps zone by zone, and by the abundance of dirt, i think this would be the level where the yellow wisp is introduced. The white ones are boosts obviously, and by the looks of it...they have the old style of ring count. So every 100 you get a life perhaps?
Title: Re: Sonic Colors
Post by: Thorn on June 17, 2010, 04:47:38 pm
^ I believe this is the first level. It's been said elsewhere that many Wisps are unlocked as the game progresses as an incentive to replay old levels with new abilities, and that the E3 demo automatically unlocked relevant Wisps. The level seems beatable without Wisps, given that every time I think I see a dead end that requires the drill or laser, it's only because a Wisp power was used earlier.

Spotted over at Retro, there's new footage from the Wii version on the French site Gamekult. They are beautiful.~

http://www.gamekult.com/video/10382705/ -- Single-player play in what was thought to be exclusive to multiplayer mode. You don't have to miss out on this zone just because your friends don't care for platformers. You can hear 8-bit versions of the tunes from Tropical Resort and Sweet Mountain and Eggman's leitmotif.

http://www.gamekult.com/video/10382707/ -- Footage of a new act of Tropical Resort (not act 1 or 2). The music has different instrumentation than what can be heard in footage of the first two acts.

I don't mean to start or spread any kind of rumors or anything ... but it just now occurred to me that the multiplayer-type stuff looks very much like it could have been done in a custom level designer...

^if there's not an official one, I have little doubt that those of us with homebrew ideologies will find a way to make one.

Even more Tropical Resort footage, with bits not shown in any of the acts seen to date. This is confirming at least four or so acts per zone, even if each act is shorter than the Act 1 areas in Unleashed 360/PS3 (they're more on par with the secondary acts). Notice that the music has the instrumentation we heard in the first videos of Tropical Resort while the video from two days ago doesn't; I think it's safe to assume that they didn't change it over time, but rather made more than one version for use in-game. I'm willing to bet that this practice will carry over to other zones, and then we have the chiptune-esque versions of each tune for Game Land.

http://www.tssznews.com/2010/09/16/new-video-first-look-at-sonic-colors-ds/

The same guy who published the last video also published clean DS version footage. Did I mention that it too has a unique mix on the Tropical Resort theme? Why must that music be so catchy, I can't stop listening to the four different versions we've heard. :(

Er... I'm not too happy with Sonic Team and Sega right now.  Yes, yes, I know it looks good, but, it's not going to be released on the PS3 or Xbox 360 platforms, which means its going to suck.  Almost every Sonic game that appeared on the Wii and PS3 and Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions WAY over-ruled the Wii version.  Now that it is exclusively for Nintendo platforms, I'm having second thoughts about this game.

And seriously!?! Did you see that video? Sonic is extremely slow! Ugh, i knew this would happen, this is bull.

Wait, there were Sonic games that appeared on all three of the cur-gen systems?  When did this happen?  Why wasn't I informed?

Also, fuck you.

Yeah, definitely ... I remember this kind of thing happened in 2006 ... the game for the 360/PS3 was FAR better than the Wii game that year...

@werey: There was no game for wii in '06.

I'd still say the Wii wins that one, though.

Everyone but Aita fails fot not realising that Aita ment a single game for all 3 7th generation home consoles.
The closest was Sonic Unleashed, but because of different game engines, they can be considered different games entirely.

^Ty luxxy.  I was mostly bashing on the troll's logic there.

closer to the topic, Colors looks amazing, and has support for an actual controller (as opposed to just being motion-sensor like the BS titles in the storybook series).  The gameplay and level design remain to be seen, but I remain ever hopeful.  It's like a bad relationship you don't wanna leave because the memories are awesome... but maybe... just maybe...

I have indeed.  I haven't gotten my hands on it, and videos can be really impressive without the game being much in the way of awesome.

To me the level design seems too linear. The same problem I had in Sonic Unleashed. There seems to be a few alternative routes though, but it doesn't remove the fact that the levels seem quite straight forward. The game doesn't seem that fast either. The power ups seem to add a bit of exploring to the stages, so I don't think they went wrong with that. I can't say for sure though.

The new voice actor seems decent to me. I have only heard random shouts, but at least the voice sounds quite Sonicish.

Just going to drop this here:

A lot of info, and two videos of Tropical Resort 1 and 2. That "new" version of the tune we heard is now in Act 2. Eggman's pretty audible too.

The European DS version's demo has been out since Friday, and the North American version came out today (both via Nintendo Channel for Wii and DS Download Service). COMPETE COMPETE COMPETE! The North American demo period ends November 7th.

I'm sitting on 0'59"47 atm. SkyLights has 1'01"99 because he is a meanie and had to beat my previous times. :(

Speaking of which, the first review is up. 8.5 (both versions) from IGN. Take Unleashed, improve the controls/level design, axe were hog, add power ups and a new solid voice cast, and you have Colors.

Wow, 8.5. that's pretty decent. Wasn't the last one to get around that SADX or SA2?
