Title: The Official Grey Area of the New Rule
Post by: Starlight_Glimmer on April 07, 2014, 09:10:06 pm
I was really hoping someone else would actually start this, to move the new rule along. This thread is to ask questions regarding the new rule, ranging from super serious, to tin foil hat conspiracies (which might not even get acknowledged.)

Also please note, while this thread will cover potential serious issues I.E. (at least IMO) android and Ios stuff, don't expect it to be jumped onto quickly, unless there's a super serious unforeseeable flaw.

things I think should possibly be brought up in this thread:

- android, Ios

- possible exemptions (complaints that may or may not come in)

- things that are acceptable proof for emulators (IMO I think needs to be addressed rather quickly actually and have a set in stone policy)

- official PC sonic games ( I didn't want to bring this up in the main thread as to not muddy things further but this falls into android, Ios discussion to me)

you get the point... if you have a question, or a concern ask it/discuss it here.

If you argue that you shouldn't record videos of an emulator because you're playing on your phone then I don't even know what to say. iPhones, pads, android devices, whatever, have probably the least accurate emulators, contains the most programming shortcuts, hacks to make games work "anyway" and blablabla. If anything they are the ones that should definitely require video.

I don't like how you think you could just pick up your old tamagochi and play an emulator on that and be like "this thing doesn't have local recording so I guess I'm off the hook!" when that's completely beside the point of everything that has been argued so far.

I think that a minimum of 24 fps, 96p, full (256) colour video files of standard formats such as avi and mp4 should be the definition of video proof. If it's any less than that it's gonna be impossible to tell anything anyways.

I think official PC Sonic emulator games just are variations of the Gens emulator, or that's what I've heard anyway. I don't really like them though since they're relatively featureless and inaccurate compared to other unofficial emulators. If you're talking about PC games like Heroes or Generations I think it should be considered a valid platform, at the very least for the games that feature a stat-saving feature.

Something I forgot, I think emulating emulators should be banned as well. Think for example using Dolphin to emulate Mega Collection or Desmume to emulate Classic Collection. It wouldn't make any sense whatsoever and only serve to increase the amount of potential errors.
