Competition Central / Re: Sonic 1 2013 - an RA Query
« on: June 11, 2018, 03:10:51 pm »
My question is, is this allowed? I didn't want to post it to the charts without confirmation, since this kinda feels like a gray area for this rule, (or maybe I'm just dumb) and no one else seems to have attempted this, as simple as this is honestly.

Yes, it's allowed. That clever strategy has been used in the past. We appreciate that you asked.

This is a relevant question about competition on the site and it would not be the first time a forum post or discussion ,such as this one, did not receive recognition from any of the site administrators.

You are completely right, and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner in that other topic. The questions raised in your thread are more complex, though, so I was planning to message you on Discord for a more efficient discussion. I will seize this opportunity to finally do that. Hopefully, we can get Vicklaw and others interested involved as well.

News and Updates / Oh, boy! The hype is real!
« on: August 13, 2017, 01:04:12 pm »
So, it looks like with Mania, Sonic is closer than ever to actually truly going back to his roots. Ya, rly. It took him more than two decades, which is "not baaad", like an echidna would say after laying a shiny single egg. Yeah, they DO lay eggs. Isn't that cool? Anyway, I digress. With the release of the highly anticipated new Sonic game around the corner for console users (:V), I guess I should announce here that we will try to add charts for the game as soon as possible. During the first week of competition, players don't need to provide video proof for first places, because that would be really annoying. This is a policy that we will apply for any newly added games from now on. Of course, we still encourage you to share your runs with the world. Sharing is caring!

In other news, I am finally back to Spain after a whole year backpacking through Asia and Oceania. It feels weird. The good news is that some people contacted me about my request for coders in my last front page post, and now I will finally have the time to coordinate them with Gerbil to try and get some work done on the site. New features might finally come.

In the meantime, here is a video I recorded in Taiwan a couple weeks ago. See you on the charts, fuckers!

Also, play Yooka-Laylee if you haven't already. :)

Speaking of the future, do you guys have backups? I mean, if anything bad happens all of a sudden, will any stat or the videos that are hosted on TSC itself get lost?

We do, don't worry. The last one is a few weeks old, but Gerbil is looking into possibly making a new one this week.

Does this mean that if you do a run on an emulator that you are required to use one with rerecording functions?

No. Ideally, people would submit .giz files for Genesis games, for example. But I see where my wording wasn't clear.

Quote
When it comes to asking for coding help, could you please post more specifics and details about what you want to do?

Several things, but the top priority would be revamping chart design to accommodate new features. We would need someone acquaintanced with PHP, MySQL and database structures.

If I, for instance, got a ring stat that tied for record but with only photo proof (which under the new rule would be insufficient) would I need to submit my score as one ring less than that, or would that, as a fake stat, be treated as invalid, even if I have achieved better?

In that case, I think the most sensible thing to do would be not submitting to the chart in question at all.

News and Updates / New Heaven, New Earth. Introducing a new site rule
« on: January 01, 2017, 10:05:00 pm »
Hello, TSCers. Long time no see! Speedrunning has come a long way since this lovely site some of us like to call home took its first baby steps more than 13 years ago. In the recent years, most important speedrunning websites have revolved around video proof, having players record and link to their whole performances for their records to count or be submittable at all.

Several players have pointed this out on our forums, suggesting that we should catch up with the times. Even though it could have seemed like these requests fell on deaf ears, that was not the case. However, the staff wanted to do it the elegant way, overhauling the site to focus on encouraging players to prove their records instead of making proving your records mandatory. A hidden staff board on our forums is full of good ideas on how to achieve this the best possible way.

The problem is that such approach requires a skilled coder with free time willing to do the hard work a site redesign takes. We have done our best to find one, but it's not an easy task and we ultimately gave up (at least, I did). That's why we are introducting the following new rule:

As of 2017/01/01, all first-place records (including ties) must have a video of the whole run linked in the stat comment. Emulator runs must have an input file linked instead. Please, use the following site to upload input files: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php

We think it's a good compromise, because having players prove every submission would be overkill. In any case, depending on how it goes, we might make the rule stricter in the near future (top 3 records?).

If you are a programmer reading this and are willing to code for TSC, please contact me!

No, the final decline began when the community became toxic enough to push me away, not when I took the actual step. (...) I know that I made most of my points in my resignation post about how I felt out of touch, but I wasn't going to call people out on the front page. I left my position because I was sick of watching people use this website to be assholes to each other or to reward immature behavior.
(...)
Dickish behavior is being tolerated and even applauded for some reason.
(...)
Everybody seems to want to be a special snowflake lately, and if that special snowflakeness isn't shown to everybody on the site, it's not good enough.

Which reminds me, if you're reading any of this and thinking it doesn't apply to you, maybe it doesn't! This isn't the majority I'm addressing; it's the active minority. I'm sorry that the minority set the tone for the whole community.

These two quotes put together have me dumbfounded. So you ackowledge most of the claims you made about the community apply only to the minority yet you still decided to base your line of argumentation for your decision on admittedly inaccurate disrespectful generalizations about our community? Now, that's dickish, and I would say it confirms my assumption that your long "more direct" post was written out of spite, disregarding truth and accuracy in the process. Do you really think picturing our community in your post as a pile of assholes was a good idea? Or did it not matter to you because your level of involvement on the site had just changed? Again, I'm really sad and disappointed by the way you decided to go about this.

A 0p Championship is/was probably one of the most prestigious titles to have on the site, not to mention it's an earned title. It's a rare sight to see someone dominate a game completely. Is it really The Kid's fault to act upon inaction of admins when the obsoletion of Total - Total probably would have done the job?

Yes, it is.

Not to mention awards still can't be awarded retroactively, which, had the opposite been true, we wouldn't even be talking about this unless The Kid was still impatient.

Still not something that justifies disruptive submission behavior (nothing does, really). We could probably make that possible, anyway.

Honesty I think I should be head admin of the site, but I will settle for just regular admin status.

It seems to me a big theme about this is BS calls. Reading between the lines it seems to me the BS calling takes a serious emotional toll on thorn, which I can understand. this site has always had a huge unspoken stink about BS calling. With it a huge side of fear of being wrong, to the point that 100% pinpoint accuracy is needed to fire the BS cannon, when in reality some stats don't meet this requirement, and may need to come under question.

Im a veteran of this site, and its been like this from day one when I joined about 100 years ago. Fear, and even scolding for bringing ones stats into question. Me personally I wore it as a badge of honor, im a legitimate player, and loved that my times where good enough to be in consideration of fake.

I bring this up because if you want to talk seriously talk about moving forward and becoming relevant again THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE! people on the fence about coming to this site need to know that the stats they are trying to conquer are valid stats. There is nothing wrong with asking for proof!

this is where I understand thorns "special snowflake" rant. if this where to be instantly instituted you would have your generic 2 or 3 guys just looking to be different, loud, obnoxious, and list insane, super niche occasions where this system would fail, and argue 'LOL NOPE LETS NOT DO IT." without even trying.

omg ies less do dis

That second one is a PM, which I guess means I'm a bad person for sharing, but I had to put those two quotes together to say "wow, that's just plain dickish; fuck you." I don't expect anybody to feel forced to say goodbye or to weep at this turn of events, but to immediately question if you can strip somebody else of a title too and then ask if you can bury this topic's announcement to post things about March at the end of April? I hope you step on a Lego barefoot for those sentiments. It was nice working with you too.

Huh? I guess you were too busy thinking I was mindlessly shitting on you to actually reason out what drove me to post that, which was the fact that two people stepping down seemed like the perfect scenario to bring up the old issue of having a site owner that doesn't do anything for the site he owns.

The end of April is definitely much better than the beginning of May to post March-related content, yes. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings with that private message. I guess we are even after your extremely salty overreaction?

Everybody seems to want to be a special snowflake lately, and if that special snowflakeness isn't shown to everybody on the site, it's not good enough.(...)Zeupar just asked for SonicAD to relinquish the "site owner" title as if somebody else having the words "site owner" in his/her profile would make the person more special or powerful.(...)These are all just arbitrary titles and aren't worth drama!

That's you misinterpreting things again (maybe because of an angry state of mind?). The reason I asked him that is because having someone who hasn't posted in almost three years as the site owner does give a very bad impression of TSC. That wasn't about e-penis or TSC fame (even the thought of the concept makes me chuckle lol).

In any case, I find really sad the way you decided to go about this.

I guess the main question now is why SonicAD refuses to give up his position as site owner when he hasn't done anything for TSC in years. It's ridiculous, to be honest.

News and Updates / Re: New Sonic Adventure 2 charts
« on: April 17, 2015, 05:43:12 pm »
this idea seems pretty nonsensical to me, lol

Well, apparently you are in the minority. :V

Rings/Speed Shoes are a very good point that should be considered when formulating the rules for "checkless" M1.

Hyper has correctly addressed that concern in a previous post.

and if we're going to play the "because it's more impressive" game. How about we add Sonic R "glitchless" charts to the IL tables since glitching out of bounds and spinning around 3 times is "not as impressive" as doing it "normally".

That's a meritless parallelism considering that Sonic Adventure 2 tracks both type of records separately, which is part of the reason the new charts were suggested.

Quote
Is it being more impressive to you the only real reason to add these?

No, as this topic proves.

News and Updates / New Sonic Adventure 2 charts
« on: April 10, 2015, 02:50:58 am »
We all know that speedruns that don't involve checkpoint abuse are, in general, way more impressive than those that do. For this reason, we are considering adding Mission 4 time charts to the rankings. We would allow submitting checkless Mission 1 times to said charts, as long as the player provides a video of the run. What do you think?

Anyway, let me seize this opportunity to try this new YouTube feature recently implemented...

I have noticed that you have submitted at least three records without proof within a week, breaking our demand in the process. In particular, the following Sonic Pocket Adventure records:
  • 59,300     4/9    02-23-15    I think i'm going to try to break the 60k barrier. (no picture for either, sorry)
  • 60,100     1/9    02-28-15    THIS is record? It can certainly go higher than this. (No picture please forgive)
  • 434         1/10   03-01-15    This actually wasn't that bad. no picture, sorry zeupar
About three weeks ago, I had to send you a private message because of a similar reason. These unproven records have been deleted, and this is your chance to let us know if there are any other such records. Consider this post your last warning.

Also, I would like to stress that proving every record you submitted before October 28, 2014 as well would be very positive.

We have been discussing the accusations against you from before submissions went down. Now that submissions are restored, we have decided that you have to provide proof of all your future submissions for six months. It's important to note that this period of time isn't set in stone, and that proving your current submissions as well would be positive. I recommend you using a single post in this thread to organize your proof.

If someone gets on blacklist, will we be contacted about it? D:

Does a mondolio nako chagui count as "contact"?

Vicklaw put an end to SDM's zero-point ring leadership on Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Nope.

I've actually lost that award several times (Most recently because of SB737's appearance) and reclaimed it shortly afterward. This is no different.

Yes, he did.

Well, of course it wasn't different from those previous instances in which you lost the award. What's your point?

By the way, anyone who was disrespectful to the great Lugia is banned.

2+3 - 1+0 + 2+0+1+4 = 11

TSC has turned 11!11 Math proves that the universe is trying to tell us something. Thankfully, Gerbil was able to fix the site and reenable submissions just in time for its birthday. To celebrate it, Thorn and I have been actively deleting incorrect records that have been sitting in our rankings for quite a while. Therefore, if you see one or more of your records disappear during the next few days, that means you are in our blacklist and will never be able to sign up for TSC Gold, and "gold is better than silver" (the Pokémon games being one of the few exceptions).

Since TSC has been fixed and has a good chance of receiving a much-needed facelift (new features and chart design will be implemented if Gerbil finally gives STL access to the site), you can progressively stop being sad and start sleeping again. In the meantime, rejoice at some of the amazing new world records a few our members have set during the last thirty days:

I have a lot of free time at work now, so I'm considering writing monthly competition updates from now on.

When I discovered the concept of speedrunning, I loved it, so I wanted to have a nickname related to it. Speedruns are about quickness, and the Spanish translation of "quickness" is "rapidez", which becomes "zedipar" if written backwards. I wanted a nickname that had no hits on Google, so I tweaked "zedipar" a bit until I found a word that met that requirement and sounded cool.

a_moustache's story is amusing.

General Sonic / TSC Heroes: The truth about Zeup

ORZ, I hope you don't mind if I use this awesome topic about truths to confess something: I'm not a handsome Spaniard who enjoys football, I'm actually an interesting Brazilian oldie looking for 37+-year-old women. I live in Senegal and got rich thanks to my successful on-line shop. I enjoy programming and am a prolific Deviant. This is how I looked like when I was young and poor. Ah, I miss those days... But I digress. Any ladies interested can contact me here.

First of all, please moderate your tone, TimpZ. One should be clever enough to realize that, sometimes, irony, sarcasm, caps, etc., make it harder to take them (and their ideas) seriously.

When I originally wrote the topic, I did it with the mindset that I thought that Gens shouldn't be used in competition at all.

I want to make it clear that I like the suggestion you made in your first post in this topic and still support it. However, the idea that we should allow emulators for competition but not to prove the result of said competition is ridiculous.

Quote
However I realised that wouldn't work since most submissions are without proof. There's no way to tell what emulator was used if there's no recording of it so it's a void argument in the same way there's no way to tell if debug was used to obtain a time or score.

You yourself unwittingly pointed to the flaw in your own reasoning by bringing up the use of debug mode, which we have forbid for a decade now.

22
If there wasn't an alternative to VBA after it had been banned, that would risk stifling competition on the GBA games quite a lot. Perhaps that's the price you pay for legitimacy, but it seems to be against the general ethos of the website.

There are a few good alternatives.

23
Could the actual console not be considered a viable alternative? :P It seems weird to say some emulators aren't allowed because you can TAS on them, but others are fine even though they have the same TASing features simply because there's no emulators without those features. It puts us in the same awkward position of allowing times that couldn't possibly be proven beyond any doubt either way. The recent thread with supersonic917 is a good example of this.

That's sensible reasoning, so I think we should be responsible and take this suggestion:

if we're going to ban Gens/Bizhawk, why stop at that? Why not ban Dolphin, DeSmuME, Visual Boy Advance, and any other emulators that have TASing features for other systems?

24
I think TSC's main problem right now (and for the past several years) is that a good number of players don't trust the legitimacy of our rankings, even though many of us have done our best to keep the site free of false records. I support any suggestion that helps improve this bad image, and I believe your idea would help us move forward in that direction.

I have been talking to BizHawk's main developer today, and he said he has recently considered implementing a cheat-proof feature in the emulator (ironic, isn't it? :P). From the looks of it, though, it's not something that will be developed any time soon. In the meantime, I'm all for banning those two emulators for competition on TSC.

What I'm saying is that if you're gonna make extraordinary claims, you better have extraordinary proof.

I can't agree more with this.

- Sunset Park Zone's third act's
- Sonic Advance's Angel Island Zone's first act's

TSC is ten years old today. Yeah, really. How time flies, etc. Feel free to celebrate it with your beverage of choice! It has been ten years full of healthy competition and, most importantly, fun and friendship. At least that's what I have been told! (I joined in 2007 >_>). There has been drama too, of course, but THE FUN CANNOT BE HALTED. Thanks everyone for submitting records, discussing strategies, calling BS and visiting. It's your contributions that make this site the "premiere resource for the best Sonic series players". Holy crap we're awesome!

Sega's birthday present has been an average Sonic game. Woo! It's a bit new I warn you. By the way, a race to celebrate this Milestone is being organized and will take place in two days. Now you think on what skill you have cost!

Are you ready for 10 more years? Here we go buddy, here we go buddy. Rolken, the pimp who started it all, should be proud.

Yeah, the league allowed you to partner with other people to level the playing field a bit because different people were better at different types of games, and not everyone had every game.

The difference between a race and the league is the league was a competition on individual levels, and you were free to try to optimize that one level as much as you want. It wasn't a one-shot run through the entire game. It's a different type of competition, and could easily co-exist alongside a setup for races.

To re-re-re-clarify: The 24/7 concept will not be solely marathons, players will be able to race single levels or even play in VS mode on Kaillera for the Genesis games.

Maybe you should read carefully what people have written instead of "clarifying" over and over again... In races, two players or more play something at the same time, while on leagues, people play whenever they want (not necessarily at the same time) and whoever has the best record at the end of the deadline wins. They are completely different concepts and I like the idea of reviving leagues.
