Gaming and Grazing / So...what's up?
« on: October 06, 2016, 04:23:41 am »
So since board is pretty dead, thought I'd stir up some conversation.

What has people been up to lately?

Mania looks like a good game so, I ended up pre-ordering the non-game collector's edition. I'm also pretty hype for Project Sonic. Hopefully it's releases simultaneously on PC with consoles for 60fps goodness.

Maybe it might be a lot of work...but can't we just import all of the il's for the games over to speedrun.com? Most of the Sonic games are there and adding IL's shouldn't be that hard outside of it being time consuming (I'm a mod of a few games over there). If we're to let the site die, I think this would be the best option. That way, all of the IL's are preserved, won't have to go through the effort of updating a site that may all be for nothing, and people can still compete.

The way I think about speedrun.com is that it's for RTA runs, not ILs. I don't think that's where these types of charts should go.

It's not like TSC's servers are going to implode because Parax and Thorn left. Changes like this are (relatively) common and shouldn't cause the entire site to crumble to the ground. People get older and leave. They grow out of who they used to be. They no longer are the same person when they started in the position. Change happens. It's up to us to adapt to it, live through it and go with it. We shouldn't give in and say that the site is dead because the main admin has left us. Power has changed hands multiple times on this site. There's no reason to go so worked up about this.

No one said the site was going to explode or anything but given the current situation that we're in (the site need a huge update badly, site is missing admins, the head admin hasn't decided to pass the site on yet, people are starting to not care about losing championships, and the site is in a decline), uploading everything to speedrun makes sense. We don't have to leave TSC but if something was to happen to it, we would at least have everything there. Plus, since everything there requires a verification through the active mods, it'll be a lot easier to catch cheating.

In regards of getting worked up, no one is getting worked up. You are trying to be as optimistic as possible in a situation that's pretty bleak that we can't directly influence.

- A few of the long time admins have left due to RL and just moving on from Sonic games leaving only Momma Blimp, Zeupar, and Gerbil (probably butchered this) unless I'm missing someone else
- Sonic AD, The head admin, for some reason still hasn't passed on the keys to the site even though he hasn't really been active (if at all) for quite a few years now.
- The site needs a huge update as, TBH, it looks like shit now.
- The person who can update isn't really active as much and if he does update, it may be for nothing as there are other sites that does the same thing TSC does but also host other games
- The community has become toxic towards each other (myself included)to the point that people shit on other games or other people for no justifiable reason, as we've seen in this post.
- The only people I feel is capable to be come the new age admins for the site, if it's to be kept going, is people I don't think the admins want to pass the torch to or they don't want it.
- The site is in a decline

Pretty bleak, don'tcha think?

Before I start I'd like to wish Thorn and Parax good luck with their future endeavors.

Personally I think it might be better to let the site die. With the current state of how easy it is to look for records, stats, other runners, etc on YT, Twitch, speedrun.com hell even twitter and other social media I don't think there is much need for TSC to be around. However the primarly reason I say this is that this site is outdated as hell and I do not have much faith in gerbil to update this site. With an outdated site there isn't much you can do. And that admins can't do that much without the irc or gerbil, well that's just disappointing.
Another option would be updating the site but that would require a lot of work. And personally I don't think it's worth the trouble for anyone to do that. After all TSC is after its prime and lasted for over 10 years (which is pretty damn long). But I guess it'd be all up to gerbil or for another developer to show up.

This is just my two cents on that matter.

After much thought, I've decided to pass the torch of Head Admin on to the next person. I've been sliding out of touch with the speedrunning community as of late and haven't had the motivation to work with the site. I also don't have the knowledge of all 52 games and two DLC expansions on the site that I need to in order to separate valid BS calls from invalid ones nor do I have the power to fix some issues on the site. I don't get to see any of the social scene on TSC anymore, as it's moved off-site into smaller pockets in which I don't get involved unless called for. When I do get called for, it's typically not for good things; for example, I've recently watched old friends go at each other's throats over events tied to the site. All of this has been a bit much to deal with (and frankly makes me come off more than a bit whiny when all I experience is the negatives), so I think it's time that I give my title to people more willing to invest time into the site with a positive attitude.

As GerbilSoft currently has the most power on the site, he will carry the Head Admin title from here forward.

Thank you to everybody who's been pleasant and helpful during my time heading the site.

Good luck to you and your future endeavors.

back on topic a bit.. the community cant really be blamed completely, at least half the fault falls on sonic team. they havent made a decent sonic game since sonic generations and sonic colors, speed runner bias aside, these are barely not shit games, these are definitetly no Sonic adventures/sonic2/sonic3 par games by far. To make matters worse, their latest greatest, sonic boom! go find the timer in that game! Sonic team literally peed on us with that. (oh and the cartoon sucks too imo)

We actually have ppl in this thread that think Sonic 06 was a great peak in competition. which is the equivalent of saying sonic 1 gba is one of the cornerstones of tsc. It's not their fault though! sonic 06 came out in 2006! that is going on 9 years ago (yah that long lol)! that game is shit, but thats what they were born into, and think they found some niche fanbase with this site.

the community is only dieing because sonic team has put us in struggle mode for years, giving us games that critics give 5/10, 3/10, 2/10, mostly rightfully so!!! and we just put on a fake smile and play it (personally sonic team broke the last straw with me on sonic and the lost worlds, I went berserk). we have a game on the site that has only 3 players, and is almost 5 years old, why? because its shit.

that all being said though, im still willing to hang out for forever and help this place out the best I can. besides, there is a lot of exclusive records only on this site. so its nearly impossible to kill tsc no matter how much it dies.

You wanting to become admin was pretty lol in itself but this post takes it to a whole new level. I'm just curious of why you thought it was a good idea to bash Sonic 06. Yeah, the game is bad IMO (I don't speak for others) but the reasons you gave were LOLcoasters. Maybe people run the game because...I don't know...they like it.

Just because a game is bad doesn't mean people can't still enjoy running it.

My actual opinion:

I feel that someone of new blood should take over the site. Passing the torch off to other old admins who aren't really active much doesn't improve the situation much. If the site is to improve it's situation, pass the torch on to someone who is not only very active on the site, but has a good head on their shoulders and can make rational decisions without any bias or letting feelings take control. I don't think that the site needs to start from scratch or that we necessarily need someone from the community to update the site. It could be outsourced and I actually know a few people who could actually do it depending on what EXACTLY needs to be done to get the site up to speed.

As for proof, video proof AND photo proof (optional)should be the new standard. It'll still be possible to fake times but it'll be much easier to call out BS if the site is to go this route. The honor system at this point (justified back in 2003 due to technology limitations) is no longer a reliable system due to the overabundance of cheating that has gone on during the years.

As for RN, that doesn't need moderation nor any TSC affiliation to run them every week as it just requires consistent people. If a group is dedicated to running a game every week (i.e Ninja Gaiden Saturdays), then it should be fine.

TSC Race Night / Re: Race Night feedback for 2014!
« on: August 17, 2014, 03:17:07 pm »
Okay, so I agree with most of Token's points about the voting system (though I'm still on the fence about not allowing multiple votes), but a few of the other suggestions either are not going to work or be carried out very carefully.

-Racing non-Sonic games could work, but I think we should only race certain kinds of games. I think it would be more annoying than anything to race super long games like RPGs or adventure games because racing those kind of games may not appeal to some users. I also think we should at least stick to SEGA/Sonic Team games because this is a Sonic site and we shouldn't stray TOO far from that. Also, these races should be very uncommon, maybe like once a schedule or something. If it was any more than that it would be more annoying than special and new imo.

-Anything involving physical prizes is an absolute no, imo. There are some people who want to do very well in races but do not care for earning anything physical out of it/don't want to give out their address. This would basically mean that the only people who should try to win are those that want a prize, and people who don't care should let others who want to try for prizes do better than them. I just...can't see this working out at all. And prizes usually work better in big races or tournaments, nowadays we have races with like two people sometimes. I do agree that a ranking system could be fun, however, just without physical prizes involved. (Though technically, we sort of have a ranking system with Hyper's statistics, but I think we should maybe start from scratch because it's impossible to knock the people who have been here since the beginning off the top. If we erase the rankings and start over, both the old and new people have a chance.)

-Weekdays for RNs are also an absolute no, it would actually decrease the amount of people racing due to school, certain weekday jobs, etc. Friday/Saturday/Sunday is just much more accessible for the majority of people. I also think 12 PM is just a little too early; I think if we have to make it earlier it should be somewhere in the middle, like around 2-2:30. I think that's fair enough.

I changed my layout...it looks...weird

- In regards of the time change, I suggested 12 with the intention of keeping the EU people in mind. 2 seems reasonable but let them decide. I suggested a weekday as it's in a sense more assessable for people since people like to do things Saturday night and you can be often faced with a choice of racing or go out...at least I am. If anything, Sunday seems reasonable as well.

- As for prizes, it's a pretty good idea but I see what you're saying. At the same time, prizes is what kinda draws people in and keep them coming back. Also, by supplying prizes, it kinda brings spirits up and shows that what you're doing isn't for nothing and people are noticing your work. I suggested it because it's a method I used for my tournaments and now they've become successful although I've stopped giving prizes for a different reason which had a good defense. As I said before, it should be for someone who wins the season but could also implement a rule that doesn't allow mods to win to avoid a rigging argument. Also, we could do a prize for the person who has most improved as well.

I have more to say but I have a tournament to run so I'll just finish up later.

TSC Race Night / Re: Race Night feedback for 2014!
« on: August 17, 2014, 01:34:58 pm »
I agree and support all the ideas token said, I think the voting system definitely needs improving, perhaps a certain amount of points, rather than some people voting for multiple characters. And the way a tie is decided could be changed, not sure how it could be done though (perhaps basing it on the goal history of the game?)

There's a few things with the voting system that NEEDS to change and should be a PRIORITY.

- There shouldn't be more than 2 choices in both game types and character choice as the votes are spread out and often times causes confusion and/or rigging votes. IMO, There should be 1 set goal and a choice of two characters. That way, it's either vote for one or the other.

- Another thing, the ability to vote for MULTIPLE goals shouldn't be a thing. Granted, I get that it gives people a backup choice if the goal they want isn't available or just to have it as a second option. IMO, if my previous suggestion ISN'T taking into consideration, this should be the way to go about it.

- In regards to voting, I feel that once you vote, it should be permanent. Vote changing not only throws the count off but it will also entice other people to switch as well and/or discourage others to not races...especially in a tie.

- In regards to ties, they should be broken by people who show up to the race room about 15 minutes beforehand (You know what time the race starts so there should be no reason to not be in there 15 minutes before). If all voters show up, it should either a) fall down to the extra people who show up or b) chosen by random generator or another method that isn't influenced by anyone.

- Penalties should occur for those who vote and don't show to the room without letting anyone know in advanced. I'm thinking 1 race for first time offenders, 2 races for 2nd time offenders, 3+ for subsequent offenders. If you're not going to enter a race, it should be your responsibility to let either FF or Hyper know that you aren't going to enter as it takes 2 seconds to do. In addition, I was told that banned users from submissions votes didn't count (not sure how true this is) so this should probably be made known in post if it is true.

I think that's it for now. If I come up with more things regarding this specific post, I'll just edit it.

Edit: I think RN should change to a weekday night or move to an earlier time in the day. 12 PM EST sounds quite fair as it's either early for some or not as late for the EU residents.

I only glanced at OP so some of this might have already been said but here's my suggestions

- Change the voting system
- Change the way a tie is decided
- Start penalizing people who vote and don't show up to said race
- Make a day in the current TSC schedule to possible race non Sonic games to spice things up a bit
- Start including prizes for those who win the most races in a schedule (I wouldn't mind supplying those)
- Incorporate a ranking system that's both friendly and competitive where if people reach a certain rank, they win a prize (I can supply these as well).

12
bumping this thread up, i dont think there's enough interest in it yet to really make it happen though

Agreed. Will probably wait until after the marathon.

13
Sonic 1, I'm definitely interested in this, just wondering if streaming is required, as in going to be away for a couple of weeks during this, so I may be able to still race those weeks, just not stream.
Also sounds like a great idea!

As long as you are present in the race room and don't obtain a suspicious time, it should be fine.

Tournament Central / Sonic Ranbats #1 (July 30th, 2014 @ 4PM EST)
« on: July 27, 2014, 11:05:23 pm »
Okay, so I've actually have been sitting on a idea to revive Flyby's league for literally a year now but I had no idea how she ran it. I've been thinking and thinking but nothing came to mind. I even had a rough draft of an idea but point system would have worked weird and not everyone would have ran every level. So instead, I came up with this.

What's a Ranbat? It's an event everyone who participates will run a specific game (which is selected before hand via vote) where seed points are awarded to each player per ranbat after completion. Once a player reaches the required amount of points for the season, the season will end and the winning player will receive a prize.

Prizes Awarded At The End of The Season

1st Place can elect to get one of the prizes below:
- Sonic T-Shirt
- 1 Copy of Freedom Planet for steam (if you haven't checked it out yet, you should)
- $20 Amazon Gift

2nd Place gets a $10 Amazon Gift Card

The need to know:

When: July 30th 2014 @ 4PM EST (Wednesday)
Stream: www.twitch.tv/token
Check-Ins: Room will be opened at 3PM EST on SRL
Player Limit: None

Point structure:
1st = 10
2nd = 7
3rd = 5
4th = 2
Participation = 1

Points required to win season: 80

Ranbat will be held every Wednesday unless stated otherwise.

So the first games up for vote is
- Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis Version)
- Sonic CD 2011

If interested, please post which game you want to vote for.

This necromancy right now...you are all going to hell.

You're assuming I've seen this other thread and you're not realizing that not only have I NOT seen the thread but I barely talk on forums as I have other obligations to other communities that I prioritize over TSC (obvious by seeing how many post I've made in 2 years right next to my name), so yes, I'm telling you here that you're idea is shit and it's not marathon worthy as it'll be a waste of time. When people come to watch a Sonic marathon, not only are they there to watch the game completed fast but to also listen to the music that fills them with nostalgia from our younger days. Your idea to replace this feel of nostalgia with songs or "memes" is, although different, a terrible idea as not everyone has the same taste of music and can turn people off from the stream. That's not something FF is looking for and she has tried to tell you as much but you didn't respect that.

As for asking for a "reasonable compromise", you don't deserve one. Honestly, IMO, you shouldn't be involved in the marathon because of your recent behavior. If you would have just continued the discussion in PM like an intelligent person would have, I'm sure FF would have worked something out with you as she's nice like that but as the arrogant fool that you are, you made a spectacle about it in public and not only made FF look like a bitch but made yourself out to be the victim and made it seem like everyone gangs up on you just to shit on your ideas which is not the case. It's great that you came out with an original idea and that you spent loads of time on it but to get pissed off at people because they didn't like your idea is childish and to get mad at people because they said something NOW and not before is bitch nigga status. You don't know what people got going on in their lives and will not be on TSC ALL THE TIME to respond let alone read EVERY topic. For the past few weeks, things has been going on in FF's RL (that I'm not going to share out of respect) that has prevented her from working on the marathon as much as she would like to. Also for her personal reasons (that I'm also not going to share), she needs this to be a success and to run smoothly as possible so for an idea like this to be in the marathon isn't really a good idea either, especially with the pressure of running a marathon and making sure nothing goes wrong.

On a serious note, from this day going forward, you need to chill with saying moronic stuff as it makes people dislike you and you won't get the respect that you feel that you deserve. If someone shoots down your idea, just brush it off and try again next time. For someone who used to be admin on this site, I, along with others, would expect better from you yet you allow your arrogance because you was a former admin to blind your judgement and that makes you think and say irrational things.

Shape up man. We don't got time for this shit.

Kid. Really? That fact that you didn't read the other thread not only shows how little you cared by simply bandwagoning others, but only amplifies your ignorance when I told you about the other thread and you acted as if you read it.

A'int nobody got time for your ignorance either.

I don't have to read a thread to know that you're an idiot. I also have no need to bandwagon anyone. I just call it like I see it. Who cares about the other thread. That's irrelevant here. You keep using that as a defense like it's valid and as if someone actually gives a shit.

So repeat of what I said

Stop being a dumbshit.

17
It's not an insult if it's the truth. It's been two months. If you have the audacity to speak the way you did in this thread then you had it to speak up in the other one.

All I'm really asking for at this point is a more reasonable compromise, given that I put lots of effort into what I already constructed. And I don't see how I'm out-of-line for doing that when those who disliked the idea took so long to say that they did.

Shape up man. We don't got time for this shit.

18
And what's wrong with saying "I don't like idea x" in a discussion? That's what discussions are for.

Not only that, but I also performed four practice streams, and most who watched said they liked it.

I saw only positive reinforcement towards the idea until this thread popped up.

TSC's userbase seems to have developed a bad rep for reacting late and loud. What's up with that?

Because telling someone directly that their idea is shit in public is bad taste which is why I worded things the way I did. Just because the people in your stream liked it doesn't mean everyone else will. This is just not something that should be in a main marathon and should go, like I said, on the bonus stream. Further, to insult the TSC userbase is disrespectful as only Werey and I had indirectly said this was a bad idea main marathon wise and it's a bad look

19
Maybe I wouldn't have "failed to see" your opinion if you had put it somewhere where I could see it, along with everyone else.

"If anything, it should be added to bonus stream if there is one"

Man...I wish I knew how to read. Too bad.

20
^Oh yay, another one who didn't read up until now. If you all hated the idea this much, why not speak up like, I don't know, over two months ago, before we reached this stage in the planning?

Except...I did read. You just failed to see the reason why this is probably not such a good idea for a marathon.

21
Just screw it. If y'all want to scrutinize the idea into oblivion then you've gotten your wish. Y'all can keep on doing your thing and I can go enjoy other venues.

I've about had it with putting tons of creative effort into making something new work only to have it torn to shreds by those who haven't even given two shits about it until it comes to light.

I'm just super pissed off about this and I've been condescended in chat like I simply concatenated a "list of tracks that I personally liked."

I chose songs which were not only widely known and popular, but also fit the themes of the stages with their unique attributes. I even went as far as to provide two such fits for each stage. That took about a week's worth of effort!

I get that the initial list was too much to be voted on, so I narrowed it down to just the memes that could be swapped in at an incentive, while asking to keep the other tracks; so as to not make the whole run feel awkward. (Because it does when you only swap out a few tracks.)

But apparently that's still not good enough. No, instead we want me to show off everything possible in the PC version of the game, when all we know at the moment is a hop over LB2/LR2 and an actual detriment to other stages thanks to the nerf to most zips and horizontal overflow and a lack of pause abuse potential.

Oh, and two-button spindashing.

I'm at a barricade now and I really don't know what else to do.

Um...that specific idea isn't really a good idea for a marathon. If anything, it should be added to bonus stream if there is one. Getting mad at someone for not approving the list on a public forum like it's their fault is also not a good look. If you have a problem with the the verdict, it should be addressed in PM or private.
