Sega revealed this week their new title Sonic Hater Adventure, which is apparently designed to appeal to long time critics of the series. "We have finally decided to listen to the foolish hypocrisy of these gamers, who have given up on our franchise a long time ago." said Takashi Iizuka, as he narrated the demo. "We want to show with this game that we really do care about our loyal fans, who we have shamefully turned our backs on until this point. I hope that in this game, every one of their trivial complaints has been addressed."

In Sonic Hater Adventure, Sonic, an obnoxious and reckless short chubby blue hedgehog, uses his supersonic speed to defeat the menacing Dr. Robotnik, while still finding time to get in a chile dog or two. The game takes place on a planet called Mobius, populated by many generic bubble-headed furries who live in straw huts, and Dr. Robotnik, who is bent on conquering the world and covering the natural landscape with morbidly colored factories and cities designed for robots. The environments are a savvy combination of fantasy and cyberpunk, and are designed by legendary european landscape artist Verddun Mahieu.

This may be startling to some, considering that this game turns around design decisions made since the first Sonic, including the world the game takes place, and the name of the villain.
"We knew we had to change if we wanted to reclaim the interest of the boring westerner." said Mr. Iizuka. "American gamers have different perspectives than Japanese gamers. They want everything to be as literal as possible."

The game is slated to feature a modest cast, including one new character named Ashley. Ashley is not playable, instead he serves as Sonic's navigator. He doesn't have any outstanding traits, he is however a level-headed and balanced character. In the demo we played, Ashley helped us guide Sonic through the training stage, and explained how to use the game's unique camera and Z-targeting system in the game's 3D segments.
"Sonic is fast, but very precise to control" Iizuka noted, as he demonstrated using the shoulder buttons to adjust Sonic's speed. "The challenge comes from navigating a series of platforming challenges which steadily increases in difficulty as the game progresses." We were told that about 70 percent through the game, Ashley will have taught you all of Sonic's moves. Supposedly, the game begins to let go of your hand at this point. "At a certain point, you will have to complete the rest of the game on your own, but you would have the controls mastered. Completing Sonic Hater Adventure will be a very rewarding gameplay experience." We have confirmed that the Chaos Emeralds can be attained in Sonic Hater Adventure. We're told that they will increase Sonic's abilities and unlock a new ending, adding replay value to the game.

Other characters to make a return include Amy, who incidentally is renamed Sally Acorn. She has undergone a personality change as well. No longer does she actively chase Sonic -- she is now more reserved and shy. Sonic also apparently has a romantic interest in her as well, and even asks her out in the game's story intro, which introduces the intimidating new Robotnik who captures her before setting the forest on fire. It is at this point that a group of freedom fighters, including Sonic and Ashley, decide to rescue her and defeat Robotnik's reign of terror once and for all, without ever thinking about how he could exist as the only human on the planet. The story is expected to have at least one betrayal and the death of at least one minor character. The tone of Sonic's new adventure is much darker and more serious, but it does not have guns. Sonic's only asset is his speed, and a trusty shoulder bag in which he carries his rings and other various items. Takashi Iizuka closed:
"Sonic Hater Adventure marks the return of Sonic as a respectable creative work."

Sonic Hater Adventure is due to come out this fall for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It's release coincides with the release of the new Sonic the Hedgehog, which is a spin-off release designed to appeal to a less mature market.

In other news, Square Enix announced the release of Final Fantasy 4, named so since it is being touted as the true sequel to the USA release of Final Fantasy 3 (Final Fantasy 6 in Japan). Square Enix made this move to finally restore the number order to the USA line of games. We have little other information about Final Fantasy 4 so far, but Square Enix showed off this concept artwork of the main character, who appears as a bald, gun-toting Pole in camo. We'll keep you up to speed as Square Enix reveals more information about this bold and exotic new direction.

I have no idea what you're trying to say with this.

Also it's "generic".

I don't feel like looking for the other topic, so I'll say it here: the last thing we need is one of those obligatory old vs new Sonic debates that don't serve any purpose.

I didn't mention the old games..... This isn't about old vs. new, but about the new vs. most gamer's crazy expectations of what the new games should be like and that they usually criticize them for baseless reasons. Of course, this whole time the old games are eternally locked into a state of perceived godly perfection and rose-tinted nostalgia.

I like the old games. I like the new games, too.

Baseless my arse.  How about cameras?  How about ridiculous glitches?  How about shockingly poor level design?  Actually address our issues with the franchise as it is now instead of just trying to shrug us off in a pseudo-intellectual manner.

The old games were the pinnacle of gaming at the time, in terms of the tech, the graphics and the gameplay.  Now, Sonic is a middle-of-the-road, get-it-out-cheap franchise because it doesn't fit the key demographic (18-30 with the big monies).  Therein lies the problem - Sonic Team need to ignore that demographic to produce a great game, but need to pander to it (Shadow anyone) to make big money (or at least try to).

I maintain that purely in terms of "fun factor", Sonic 2 is the best game I have ever played.  I get as much enjoyment out of it now as I ever did, and more than any 3D Sonic title.  I also accept that those days are gone for Sonic because there isn't the money there.  However, that doesn't stop the new titles being poor in comparison, and I refuse to be talked down to for holding that opinion.

Some of that was funny, but some of it wasn't. (Dr. Robotnik? That's a good thing!)
I didn't get some of it. The thing about Amy=Sally is funny, but I didn't think too many
people actually liked that. (It's from an old game, but it gets criticized a lot, doesn't it?)

I don't think the new games are great, but they're not terrible.
Sonic Adventure is my favourite one, and it's in between.
(Dr. Robotnik? Chunky-looking characters? A release date that will soon fit perfectly
between the present and the original Sonic the Hedgehog? SA is not "new".)

I have to go. Anything else I have to say can be added later.

No no, if you don't like the games for actual flaws I can know that. I wrote this thing to address less 'valid' opinions, and especially opinions against Sonic creatively and not just gameplay-wise.

Pseudo intellectual? Heh, that's awesome. You might know this but I've always considered Sonic naysayers to be 'smarter than their own good'. Criticizing Sonic on principles and making fun of the setting/story/themes.

Robotnik is fine but many people don't get that Eggman was in fact the original name from day 1, 1991. Plus it has nothing to do with old vs. new, 2D vs. 3D, just a pointless creative-related complaint that has nothing to do with gameplay.

We are entering a new generation of Sonic, but as far as the debate goes, Sonic looks to still have two generations: the original series, and everything else. It would be awesome if new Sonic is adopted by naysayers, but I'm just not sure. Well it's up to them I guess.

'Get-it-out-quick' ... To me only Shadow and Riders are like that. They were really good, with that in consideration. Heroes had me fooled when it first came out so I can't judge it, plus it did a lot of things well that SA1-2 didn't. Still, to me Sonic has basically no competition, and the games still have that same feeling since Nights and Burning Rangers for Saturn. (Sonic Team <3) They give us quantity and quality, and enough time has passed since SA2 that we are due another epic. Which we are getting this year. Hopefully it's good.

I haven't been here in awhile, so please forgive my late response to this...

All that detail is from the comic series. And did he really call us "boring westerners"?

(yes, I'm aware that alot of people here aren't weterners, I'm just sayin...)
Here I stand on a pile of broken promises, left with nothing but a broken heart and an empty bank account.

Sega revealed another stage this week which appeared to be a casino stage. "Sonic must escape a morbid pinball table of death" said the spokesperson. The pinball machine created by Dr. Robotnik, we're told, is named 'The Eggman' -- a subtle reference to Sega's questionable creative judgement in the past. The course apparently was built by Robotnik as a way of taunting Sonic and exhausting his energy before he would fall in the inescapable black void in the bottom from which there is no return. The music for this stage started out as a lighthearted carnival theme, but soon broke down and became a dark orchestra loosely based on the tune played at the beginning. A hip and effective combination.

Sega also announced the staff working on the title. The newly formed team includes several artists from the Rayman game series. We are told the settings in the game will be balanced between natural realism and surreal, Rayman-style environments. Iizuka noted that the team studied environments from severals stages in Sonic and Rayman games alike, including Amazing Arena from Knuckles Chaotix.

The cast in the game is also revealed. We were surprised that they changed Sally's personality since the last time we spoke with them. Here, take a look:

Sonic the Hedgehog - age 20
The one and only blue blur, this dude with a 'tude is the fasting thing alive. Sonic is about as patient as an toddler with ADD and a full bladder, but no one can outmatch Sonic when it comes to speed. However, it has to be seen if his speed is enough to defeat the villainous Dr. Robotnik and save Sally. He loves rock music, chile dogs, and fishing.

Sally Acorn - age 19
Sally Acorn (known as Amy Rose by clueless elitists) is a strong yet reserved former princess who has earned her place as the leader of the group. Somewhat sassy, she is annoyed by Sonic's blunt attitude, but is somewhat flattered by his efforts. (although she is too proud to show it) Now that she's captured, it's up to Sonic and the rest of the gang to save her... and this time, they don't have her to tell them what to do! (gasp)

Ashley the Possum - age 27
Ashley is an honest and mild-mannered possum who earnestly tries to just get through the day. A friend of Sonic, he now serves as his navigator via a tiny radio next to Sonic's ear. Between explaining the controls and guiding Sonic through platforming sessions, he also serves as a story mechanic and a little comic relief. Story fans will be hooked on learning about Ashley's foibles in normal life, including info on his relationship with a certain character. (We are told dialogue can be skipped at any time by pressing the start button.)

Knuckles the Anteater - age 22
Knuckles is a sly red anteater with spiked fists who comes from a magic floating island. He is familiar with the power of the Chaos Emeralds and has used their power to fight Sonic in the past. Now he is causing trouble for Sonic once again on his quest to defeat Dr. Robotnik. What are his motives this time? Has he been tricked by Dr. Robotnik once again? It's up to Sonic and Ashley to set the record straight!

Hernandez the Hippo - age 31
This strong-but-silent beefy plumber can jump the highest of the group. He never got along well with Sonic, but can they put aside their differences long enough to save Sally? Or will they have to fight each other over the right to save the world? Just what is Hernandez's problem, anyway?

Equilibrium the Muridae - age ???
Equilibrium is a slick, dark, and mysterious being who appears to look like a silhouette and is rumored to come from another dimension. It's not entirely clear if he is friend or foe and what his motives are, but apparently he isn't very nice. Who or what is Equilibrium the Muridae??

Dr. Robotnik - (rumored to be age 438)
Dr. Robotnik is an evil dark demigod who is obsessed with robots. He is hell-bent on taking over the world and crushing the lives of all other living beings on Mobius. To him, nothing is a finer scent than the exhaust fumes of even the most crudely built machines. He captures Sally Acorn to lure his arch-enemy Sonic into his fortresses and destroy him, leaving himself with no opposition to carry out his nefarious schemes.

Check back with GGM later for official artwork from the game!
