Well... I pretty sure you're thinking of the challenges that are being done here (Emerald, Cough Drops, and the Mural Challenges). Pretty much, when you're using on Gens+ and opened up a ROM you right click and it should open up a menu. Find and click on "Record Input Movie" to record a run. When you are done record right click again and choose an option with the word - stop. A .giz file should be produced and saved in the folder you chose to put it in.

To open a .giz file you have to save one on you're computer or have one that you made. Open up Gens+ and play the correct ROM. After you have the correct ROM right click into options menu and choose "Play Input Movie". Select a .giz file that can be played with the selected ROM and you can now view it's content and stuff.

If you're not talking about any of the stuff I mentioned then... SM can tell you. <_<

^Pfft, Sonic Jam pwns that any day.  But yeah, Rick summed it up.  If you want to play the challenges here, .giz is the preferred recording format.  For normal stat submission, playing almost any unaltered version of a game is fine.
<RPGnutter> Well I think your reasoning was dumb, so you get sassed
<RPGnutter> Thats how it works
